Quran Learning and Good Character

The character of kids learning the Quran should be exemplary as a good character is the product of the implementation of the Quran. It was narrated by Aisha (RA) that the character of the prophet is the Quran( Sunan Abi Dawud 1342) which means that his character conforms to the message he delivers from the Quran.

Attaining and maintaining good characters are of utmost importance to a Muslim as the Prophet (saw) says in these hadiths:

(1)Narrated AbudDarda’
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is nothing heavier than good character put in the scale of a believer on the Day of Resurrection.( Sunan Abu Dawood-2234) and
(2)Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: On the Day of Judgment the dearest and closest to me, as regards my company, will be those persons who will bear the best moral character.( Al-Tirmidhi Hadith-218)
What then are good characters? Some of them are known to us by instinct and the Quran and the Sunnah have them confirmed and/or perfected.
The following, are three of the characters that the Quran teaches;

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.

This verse commands that Muslims should always be among those that speak the truth in order to maintain truthfulness. The hadith below also emphasizes the importance of always speaking the truth

‘Abdullah reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

“It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and the man who continues to speak the truth and endeavours to tell the truth is eventually recorded as truthful with Allah, and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah”.( Sahih MuslimBk 32, Hadith 6309)
In essence, kids should be encouraged to keep the company of those that are truthful.

(Thankfulness/Gratitude)

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’ “

Gratefulness has a relationship with contentment;kids can only be grateful for whatever they are given when they are contented and do not vie with their mates in material possessions

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

Look at those who stand at a lower level than you but don’t look at those who stand at a higher level than you, for this would make the favors (conferred upon you by Allah) insignificant (in your eyes).  Sahih Muslim 2963 c

The ability to give out from one’s possession is an indication of kindness and leads to piety. Allah says:

Never will you attain the good [righteousness] until you spend [in the way of Allah ] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.

Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allah said :

“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity, commanding good and forbidding evil is charity, your giving directions to a man lost in the land is charity for you. Your seeing for a man with bad sight is a charity for you, your removal of a rock, a thorn or a bone from the road is charity for you. Your pouring what remains from your bucket into the bucket of your brother is charity for you.”(Chapters on Righteousness And Maintaining Good Relations With Relatives ( Vol.4, Book 1, Hadith 1956).

Kids should be taught the act of sharing too as some kids are only good at showing their toys to their friends but they do not want to share them. (Best of Islam, Mod. 11).

The supplication of looking at the mirrorSo, we should strive to inculcate the right moral behaviors into kids at a very tender age so that they grow with them while we keep acting as their role models and finally, it is important that we always implore Allah for good character as the Prophet (SAW) taught us (Allahumma ahsanta khalqii fahassin khuluqii)the supplication when looking into the mirror.  Narrated Aisha

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) used to say, “O Allah, as Thou hast made my form beautiful so make my character beautiful.”(Al-Tirmidhi Hadith-1318)
